07 Jun Beyond Traditional Hearing Aids: Cochlear Implants
Cochlear implantation is a proven effective treatment and long term solution for those with severe to profound hearing losses that do not achieve benefit from traditional hearing aids.
A cochlear implant is a surgically implanted device, with an external processor that is attached to the side of the head. The cochlear implant stimulates the auditory nerve directly, thus bypassing the damaged cochlea.
Cochlear implantation in adults is typically successful, but does require some learning and training of the brain to adapt to the new sounds.
If you have a severe to profound hearing loss, and are unsuccessful with hearing aids, talk to your audiologist about cochlear implants. They can help you determine if you are a candidate, and make the appropriate referrals to the NS Cochlear Implant Program. http://www.nshsc.ns.ca/cipoverview.html
