The Reality

Noise-induced hearing loss is preventable. Most people don't know they have it until it's too late.

Noise damages the tiny hair cells in your inner ear. Once gone, they do not come back. The loss is slow and silent — most people do not notice until real damage is done. The good news: it is entirely preventable.

Know the Signs

The noise around you may be louder than you think.

You need to raise your voice to be heard by someone nearby
The noise hurts or causes pain in your ears
Your ears are ringing after being in a noisy place
Everything sounds muffled after the noise stops

Anyone exposed to noise — at work or during hobbies — should add a hearing test to their health checklist. A baseline test tracks your hearing and catches changes before they become permanent.

Workplace & Industrial

Noise Protection Plugs

We offer two styles for working in noise. Both are custom-fit and made to last.

  • Noise Breaker — vented plug with a small filter. Up to NRR 20 dB (CSA Class B). Best when you still need some environmental awareness.
  • Sentinel — solid plug, maximum block. Up to NRR 26 dB (CSA Class A & AL). Best when full sound reduction is the priority.
  • Available in shell, half-shell, or canal fit. Options: handles, strings, colour swirls, metal ball bearings. Easy to clean with mild soap and warm water.
Musicians & Concert-Goers

Filtered Ear Plugs

ER Musician Earplugs are built to protect your hearing without muffling the music. Sound stays clear and rich — just at a safer volume.

  • Music and speech sound natural — like removing the volume, not the quality
  • Three filter levels: 9 dB, 15 dB, and 25 dB — choose the right block for your use
  • Far better than foam plugs, which muffle and distort sound
  • Ideal for musicians, sound crew, and regular concert-goers
Swimmers

Swim Plugs

Custom swim plugs keep water out while staying soft and comfortable. A great fit for casual swimmers and those with ear conditions.

  • Soft yet tough — built for daily use in and out of the water
  • Excellent seal to keep water out of the ear canal
  • Handle and string attachment included as standard
  • Float-able material available on request
Sleepers

Sleep Plugs

Custom sleep plugs are soft, low-profile, and built for comfort through the night. A good night's rest should not depend on how quiet the world is.

  • Made from soft silicone — stays comfortable all night
  • Custom fit means no pressure or shifting while you sleep
  • Gently reduces background noise without full block
  • Great for shift workers, light sleepers, and noisy environments

How It Happens

Every loud event leaves a mark.

Loud noise triggers a chemical process inside your cochlea that keeps damaging cells for up to 7–10 days after exposure. A single very loud event — like a blast or gunshot — can cause instant permanent damage to the inner ear or eardrum.

For most people, the damage builds quietly over years. Each event causes a short drop in hearing. Over time, the ear can no longer recover — and the loss becomes permanent.

Volume (dB) Common Source
60dB Normal conversation / Dishwasher
80dB Alarm clock
90dB Hair dryer / Blender
100dB Phone / Music at full volume
110dB Concerts / Sporting events
120dB Jet planes
130dB Ambulances
140dB Gun shots / Fireworks
The Time-Volume Rule

Louder sound = less safe time.

As volume goes up, safe listening time drops fast. Work noise and hobby noise both count. A factory worker who goes to a concert has two major noise events in one day — both add up.

Intensity (dB) Permitted Time
85dB 8 hours
88dB 4 hours
91dB 2 hours
94dB 1 hour
97dB 30 minutes
100dB 25 minutes

Based on Nova Scotia workplace noise regulations (CSA standards).
