About Tinnitus

What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is a sound heard in the ear or head with no outside source. People often describe it as ringing, buzzing, or hissing.

Tinnitus is a symptom, not a disease. It is usually linked to changes in the hearing system, like hearing loss. When cells in the inner ear are damaged, the brain can create the perception of sound on its own.

Tinnitus Relief Therapy

Tinnitus relief therapy combines personal counselling with sound therapy. Together, they work to reduce or remove the effects of tinnitus.

Using Sound to Manage Tinnitus

Sound therapy uses hearing aids, nature sounds, music, or noise generators. These devices create a mix of external sound alongside the tinnitus. The goal is to reduce the contrast between the tinnitus and the world around you. Over time, the brain learns to focus outward rather than inward. This process is called neutralizing the tinnitus sound.

Hearing Aids
  • If hearing loss comes with tinnitus, hearing aids can treat both at once. They bring in environmental sounds, giving the brain new signals to focus on.
  • If your hearing is normal, small ear-level devices can still provide the sound stimulation needed to support habituation.
Music
  • Music activates many parts of the brain at once. This can lower stress and help the brain reduce its focus on the tinnitus sound.
Sound Machines
  • Sound machines play nature sounds and white noise. Some models work with a pillow speaker to help you fall asleep.
  • By filling the silence, these devices reduce the gap between quiet and tinnitus. This supports habituation over time.
Counselling
  • Counselling helps you understand tinnitus and reduce the fear or distress around it.
  • Your audiologist will build a plan with you throughout the process. The goal is to make tinnitus less disruptive over time.
