The Reality

Unfortunately, hearing loss is rising.

4.6M adults in Canada experience hearing loss (Statistics Canada, 2013)

2 in 5 adults today experience some degree of hearing loss

Changes in hearing are gradual, and often go unnoticed till it’s too late. The first signs are slower, difficult conversations — and the first to notice are friends, family, and folks you work with.

Hearing loss can have far-reaching effects throughout your life, and the lives of your social circles. Hearing Institute’s Audiologists can help you preserve the quality of your hearing through hearing technology and precautionary noise protection.

Your auditory systems age, just like you do. Noisy work environments and conditions like Diabetes, Kidney Disease or Cardiovascular issues also exacerbate hearing loss. We recommend getting a yearly hearing test — especially if you’re over 55 or have a family history of hearing loss.

The Process

How do hearing tests work?

About the Assessment

There are many causes for hearing loss: age, middle ear dysfunction, speech understanding, cognition issues, and more. Sometimes a combination of causes can make cases complex, and an Otolaryngologist may need to be involved.

Hearing Institute Atlantic conducts a battery of tests to create a clear picture of your hearing health. Our audiologists can identify and prescribe necessary precautions to preserve the quality of your hearing, and can also help facilitate referrals to specialists through your family physician.

Tests we conduct during a hearing exam:

  • Case History (intake questionnaire)
  • Otoscopy (visual inspection of the external ear, ear canal, and eardrum)
  • Immittance Test / Tympanometry (test of the function of the middle ear system)
  • Threshold Test (air conduction and bone conduction)
  • Speech Recognition (assessed in quiet)
  • Speech In Noise Test (speech recognition with noise present)
  • Extended High Frequency Test (assessment of sounds beyond 8000Hz)
